And frankly, this system already covers the essentials for most journeys. <\/p>\n\n<p>Specifically, <strong>basic Autopilot<\/strong> combines two main features:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Adaptive cruise control<\/strong>: your Tesla automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front, accelerating and braking according to traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lane keeping (Autosteer)<\/strong>: the steering wheel turns by itself to keep your car centered in its lane on highways and well-marked roads.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>To activate these functions, simply pull the right stalk towards you twice. Simple and intuitive. <\/p>\n\n<p>But be aware of the limitations: basic Autopilot <strong>does not automatically change lanes<\/strong>, does not take highway exits for you, and does not manage parking. If you live in a city with complicated parking, Enhanced Autopilot can really simplify your life.  <\/p>\n\n<p>However, if you mainly drive on the highway for your commute, the investment is less obvious. Most of the time, changing lanes manually is not a real constraint. <\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"navigate-on-autopilot-the-real-added-value-on-long-journeys\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigate on Autopilot, the real added value on long journeys<\/h3>\n\n<p>The feature that truly justifies Enhanced Autopilot for frequent drivers is <strong>Navigate on Autopilot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>On the highway, this system automatically takes exits suggested by your GPS, overtakes slow vehicles (with your confirmation depending on your settings), and manages highway interchanges.<\/p>\n\n<p>Concrete example: on my regular Paris-Lyon trip, I can activate Navigate on Autopilot as soon as I get on the A6, and the car manages the entire highway journey. I keep my hands on the steering wheel and monitor, but <strong>human intervention becomes minimal<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s impressive the first time, and it really changes the experience on multi-hour journeys.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"fsd-full-self-driving-the-most-advanced-system-but-still-in-development\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">FSD (Full Self-Driving): the most advanced system&#8230; but still in development<\/h2>\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk now about <strong>Full Self-Driving<\/strong>, priced at approximately \u20ac7,500 (or available via a monthly subscription at around \u20ac200). It&#8217;s the most expensive option, and the one that generates the most debate. <\/p>\n\n<p>First thing to know: FSD includes <strong>all Enhanced Autopilot features<\/strong>, plus additional capabilities oriented towards city driving.<\/p>\n\n<p>FSD exclusive features:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traffic light and stop sign recognition<\/strong>: the car automatically slows down and stops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>City Streets Autopilot (FSD Beta)<\/strong>: autonomous driving in complex urban environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigation through roundabouts and intersections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority updates with the latest software improvements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s be clear: the term &#8220;Full Self-Driving&#8221; is <strong>misleading<\/strong>. Despite its name, this system does NOT allow for fully autonomous driving. You must keep your hands on the steering wheel and be ready to take control at any time.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Constant supervision is mandatory<\/strong>, and it&#8217;s even monitored by the interior camera that checks if you&#8217;re looking at the road.<\/p>\n\n<h3 id=\"fsd-beta-in-the-city-impressive-but-not-yet-perfect\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">FSD Beta in the city: impressive but not yet perfect<\/h3>\n\n<p>I tested <strong>FSD Beta<\/strong> during a trip to the United States (where it&#8217;s more widely deployed), and the experience is truly technologically fascinating.<\/p>\n\n<p>The car navigates roundabouts, turns at intersections, avoids pedestrians, and handles complex urban situations. When it works well, it&#8217;s amazing. <\/p>\n\n<p>But there are also times when the system hesitates, makes overly cautious or downright strange decisions. In about 10-15% of situations, I had to take over to correct a bizarre trajectory or a prolonged hesitation. <\/p>\n\n<p>In Europe and France, the full deployment of <strong>FSD Beta is still limited<\/strong> by local regulations. So today, you&#8217;re paying for a system that will improve with future updates, but whose full capabilities are not yet accessible. <\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s precisely to <a href=\"https:\/\/tesliens.com\/mises-a-jour\/mises-a-jour-tesla-pourquoi\/\">understand how Tesla updates work<\/a> that I recommend you familiarize yourself with the over-the-air update system, because the evolution of Autopilot and FSD depends entirely on these software updates.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"which-system-to-choose-based-on-your-driving-profile\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which system to choose based on your driving profile?<\/h2>\n\n<p>After testing all three levels, here&#8217;s my recommendation based on your usage profile:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Do you mainly drive on highways<\/strong> for your daily commutes? <strong>Basic Autopilot is largely sufficient<\/strong>. It perfectly handles highway driving and will save you \u20ac3,800 to \u20ac7,500.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Do you drive a lot in the city<\/strong> with difficult parking? <strong>Enhanced Autopilot<\/strong> is more justified. Autopark and Smart Summon become truly useful in tight parking lots, and Navigate on Autopilot significantly improves long journeys. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Are you a technology enthusiast<\/strong> and early adopter? <strong>FSD<\/strong> will allow you to experience the future of assisted driving. But be aware that you are paying for features still in development.  <\/p>\n\n<p>My practical advice: start with basic Autopilot. You can always <strong>upgrade later<\/strong> via the Tesla app if you truly feel the need for additional features. No need to decide immediately when ordering.  <\/p>\n\n<p>And if you&#8217;re hesitant about FSD, the <strong>monthly subscription<\/strong> is an excellent option to test the system for a few months before committing to the definitive purchase at \u20ac7,500.<\/p>\n\n<p>Moreover, if you want to <a href=\"https:\/\/tesliens.com\/en\/settings\/optimiser-reglages-tesla\/\">optimize your Tesla&#8217;s settings<\/a> after choosing your Autopilot level, I recommend finely customizing the parameters to adapt the system&#8217;s behavior to your driving style.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"upcoming-developments-and-the-future-of-tesla-autopilot\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upcoming developments and the future of Tesla Autopilot<\/h2>\n\n<p>Tesla regularly promises new features, but experience has taught me one thing: <strong>announced deadlines are rarely met<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Another crucial point: check if your Tesla has <strong>Hardware 3 or Hardware 4<\/strong>. Vehicles with HW4 (produced since mid-2023) will benefit from better future capabilities, while HW3 might have limitations on certain advanced functions. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>European regulations<\/strong> also strongly impact deployment. Don&#8217;t count on hypothetical features that will arrive &#8220;soon.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"my-personal-verdict-after-thousands-of-kilometers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">My personal verdict after thousands of kilometers<\/h2>\n\n<p>After driving with these different systems for over 50,000 kilometers, here&#8217;s my honest feedback:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Basic Autopilot covers 80% of daily needs<\/strong> for most drivers. It&#8217;s already a remarkable system that transforms the driving experience, particularly on highways and in traffic jams. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Enhanced Autopilot<\/strong> provides appreciable additional comfort, especially if you combine urban and highway driving. But it&#8217;s not essential. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>FSD<\/strong> remains a significant investment for features still limited in Europe.
