Basic Autopilot (included for free) is sufficient for 80% of daily use, offering adaptive cruise control and lane keeping. Enhanced Autopilot (โฌ3,800) adds automatic lane changes and self-parking, ideal for city driving. FSD (โฌ7,500) promises city driving capabilities but remains limited in Europe: it’s best to opt for the monthly subscription to test it before investing heavily.
When I got my first Tesla a few years ago, I was completely lost with the different driving assistance options. Basic Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, FSD… It was impossible to understand what each one actually did without spending hours dissecting forums.
Today, this confusion persists among most future owners. And I understand them: the financial stake is huge, with up to โฌ7,500 difference depending on the chosen options.
After thousands of kilometers driven with these different systems, I’m going to share what each one concretely offers daily. My goal? To help you choose the option that truly matches your usage, without paying for features you’ll never use.

What the basic Autopilot included in all Teslas (really) does
Let’s start with excellent news: all Teslas include basic Autopilot for free, with no extra cost at purchase. And frankly, this system already covers the essentials for most journeys.
Specifically, basic Autopilot combines two main features:
- Adaptive cruise control: your Tesla automatically maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front, accelerating and braking according to traffic.
- Lane keeping (Autosteer): the steering wheel turns by itself to keep your car centered in its lane on highways and well-marked roads.
To activate these functions, simply pull the right stalk towards you twice. Simple and intuitive.
But be aware of the limitations: basic Autopilot does not automatically change lanes, does not take highway exits for you, and does not manage parking. You must keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times and remain attentive to the road.
My honest feedback? For my daily highway commutes between Lyon and Grenoble, basic Autopilot is perfectly sufficient. It significantly reduces fatigue on long journeys and brilliantly handles traffic jams.
Enhanced Autopilot: intermediate features that make a difference
Enhanced Autopilot costs approximately โฌ3,800 (price varies depending on Tesla promotions) and adds a series of features designed for daily comfort.
Here’s what you get in addition:
- Navigate on Autopilot: automatic lane changes on the highway.
- Autopark: automatic parallel and perpendicular parking.
- Summon: move your car forward or backward remotely with your phone.
- Smart Summon: your Tesla comes to pick you up by itself in a parking lot.
My honest opinion? These features truly shine in urban environments and tight parking spaces. If you live in a city with complicated parking, Enhanced Autopilot can really simplify your life.
However, if you mainly drive on the highway for your commute, the investment is less obvious. Most of the time, changing lanes manually is not a real constraint.
Navigate on Autopilot, the real added value on long journeys
The feature that truly justifies Enhanced Autopilot for frequent drivers is Navigate on Autopilot.
On the highway, this system automatically takes exits suggested by your GPS, overtakes slow vehicles (with your confirmation depending on your settings), and manages highway interchanges.
Concrete example: on my regular Paris-Lyon trip, I can activate Navigate on Autopilot as soon as I get on the A6, and the car manages the entire highway journey. I keep my hands on the steering wheel and monitor, but human intervention becomes minimal.
It’s impressive the first time, and it really changes the experience on multi-hour journeys.

FSD (Full Self-Driving): the most advanced system… but still in development
Let’s talk now about Full Self-Driving, priced at approximately โฌ7,500 (or available via a monthly subscription at around โฌ200). It’s the most expensive option, and the one that generates the most debate.
First thing to know: FSD includes all Enhanced Autopilot features, plus additional capabilities oriented towards city driving.
FSD exclusive features:
- Traffic light and stop sign recognition: the car automatically slows down and stops.
- City Streets Autopilot (FSD Beta): autonomous driving in complex urban environments.
- Navigation through roundabouts and intersections.
- Priority updates with the latest software improvements.
Let’s be clear: the term “Full Self-Driving” is misleading. Despite its name, this system does NOT allow for fully autonomous driving. You must keep your hands on the steering wheel and be ready to take control at any time.
Constant supervision is mandatory, and it’s even monitored by the interior camera that checks if you’re looking at the road.
FSD Beta in the city: impressive but not yet perfect
I tested FSD Beta during a trip to the United States (where it’s more widely deployed), and the experience is truly technologically fascinating.
The car navigates roundabouts, turns at intersections, avoids pedestrians, and handles complex urban situations. When it works well, it’s amazing.
But there are also times when the system hesitates, makes overly cautious or downright strange decisions. In about 10-15% of situations, I had to take over to correct a bizarre trajectory or a prolonged hesitation.
In Europe and France, the full deployment of FSD Beta is still limited by local regulations. So today, you’re paying for a system that will improve with future updates, but whose full capabilities are not yet accessible.
It’s precisely to understand how Tesla updates work that I recommend you familiarize yourself with the over-the-air update system, because the evolution of Autopilot and FSD depends entirely on these software updates.
Which system to choose based on your driving profile?
After testing all three levels, here’s my recommendation based on your usage profile:
Do you mainly drive on highways for your daily commutes? Basic Autopilot is largely sufficient. It perfectly handles highway driving and will save you โฌ3,800 to โฌ7,500.
Do you drive a lot in the city with difficult parking? Enhanced Autopilot is more justified. Autopark and Smart Summon become truly useful in tight parking lots, and Navigate on Autopilot significantly improves long journeys.
Are you a technology enthusiast and early adopter? FSD will allow you to experience the future of assisted driving. But be aware that you are paying for features still in development.
My practical advice: start with basic Autopilot. You can always upgrade later via the Tesla app if you truly feel the need for additional features. No need to decide immediately when ordering.
And if you’re hesitant about FSD, the monthly subscription is an excellent option to test the system for a few months before committing to the definitive purchase at โฌ7,500.
Moreover, if you want to optimize your Tesla’s settings after choosing your Autopilot level, I recommend finely customizing the parameters to adapt the system’s behavior to your driving style.
Upcoming developments and the future of Tesla Autopilot
Tesla regularly promises new features, but experience has taught me one thing: announced deadlines are rarely met.
Another crucial point: check if your Tesla has Hardware 3 or Hardware 4. Vehicles with HW4 (produced since mid-2023) will benefit from better future capabilities, while HW3 might have limitations on certain advanced functions.
European regulations also strongly impact deployment. Rules on autonomous driving are stricter in Europe than in the United States, which explains the delay in the arrival of full FSD Beta here.
Important point to consider: FSD is currently not transferable when reselling your car. If you resell your vehicle, the buyer will have to repurchase the option. It’s an investment that does not follow the car.
My most important advice: buy the system for what it does today, not for future promises. Don’t count on hypothetical features that will arrive “soon.”
My personal verdict after thousands of kilometers
After driving with these different systems for over 50,000 kilometers, here’s my honest feedback:
Basic Autopilot covers 80% of daily needs for most drivers. It’s already a remarkable system that transforms the driving experience, particularly on highways and in traffic jams.
Enhanced Autopilot provides appreciable additional comfort, especially if you combine urban and highway driving. But it’s not essential.
FSD remains a significant investment for features still limited in Europe. According to industry experts, the European regulatory framework is gradually evolving but remains cautious about autonomous driving.
If you are about to prepare for your Tesla delivery, take the time to test these systems during a trial or with a temporary subscription before committing financially.
And you, which option did you choose? Do you regret it, or on the contrary, could you no longer do without it? Share your experience in the comments, it really helps future owners make their choice!
