Cybertruck V2G: Tesla Launches Electricity Resale in Texas

Cybertruck V2G: Tesla Launches Electricity Resale in Texas

The Cybertruck is no longer just for driving on Texas roads: it can now power the electricity grid. On February 5, 2026, Tesla announced via its @teslaenergy account the launch of its Powershare Grid Support program, a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) feature that literally transforms your electric pickup into a mobile power plant.

For now, this program is starting in Texas, with an extension planned for California in the coming months. Be aware, however: this is an invitation-only rollout, not a massive opening to all Cybertruck owners.

What about France? This technology doesn’t exist yet in Europe, and I’ll explain why a little later in this article. But understanding what Tesla is implementing in the United States gives us a fascinating glimpse of what could happen here… someday.

How the Powershare Grid Support program actually works

The principle of Vehicle-to-Grid is relatively simple: your Cybertruck stores energy in its battery, and when the electricity grid experiences demand peaks, Tesla can automatically draw from this reserve to send electricity back to the grid.

You don’t have to manage anything manually. Tesla triggers the discharges based on grid needs. Your Cybertruck can provide up to 11.5 kW of power to the electricity grid, which represents a significant contribution during critical times.

In exchange for this participation, you receive credits directly applied to your electricity bill. No cash payment, but a concrete reduction in your energy expenses.

The difference from a Powerwall? The Cybertruck is mobile. You can move it, use it to drive, then plug it back in to participate in the program. This flexibility makes the concept particularly interesting.

Important context: the Texas ERCOT grid is known for its stability issues, especially since the catastrophic winter storms of 2021. V2G represents a decentralized solution to strengthen grid resilience without building new heavy infrastructure.

Conditions for participation: what you really need

Required equipment

To participate in the program, you must first own a Cybertruck. That seems obvious, but it’s worth clarifying.

Next, you need to install the Powershare Home Backup equipment, the bidirectional connection system that allows your vehicle to communicate with the electricity grid. Without this equipment, it’s impossible to send electricity back to the grid.

Tesla has not yet announced the precise cost of this installation for the V2G program, but we can expect an investment of several thousand dollars for the equipment and labor.

Mandatory subscription

You must also subscribe to Tesla Electric Drive, Tesla’s electricity provider. This is non-negotiable: the program is only accessible to customers of this service.

Another major limitation: you must live in an area served by CenterPoint Energy or Oncor in Texas. If you are in another region, even in Texas, you cannot participate for now.

Last crucial point: the program operates on an invitation-only basis. You cannot simply sign up. Tesla selects participants for this pilot program, which significantly limits the number of eligible people.

And let’s be honest: Tesla is accumulating delays on these deployments. The Powershare system was initially announced for late 2024, and V2G is only arriving in mid-2026. Don’t be surprised if the delays lengthen further.

How much can you earn with your Cybertruck?

The question everyone is asking: is it financially worth it?

The compensation system is based on credits applied to your electricity bill, not direct payments. The amount depends on several variables:

  • How often Tesla requests your vehicle
  • The amount of energy you provide to the grid
  • Your tariff plan (off-peak vs. peak hours)

To give you an idea, some Powerwall owners participating in VPP (Virtual Power Plant) programs have received substantial credits during extreme weather events, sometimes several hundred dollars in a season.

But let’s be realistic: you’re not going to get rich with this program. The goal is rather to reduce your electricity bill while contributing to grid stability.

A legitimate question concerns battery degradation. Each charge/discharge cycle slightly wears down the battery, and participating in the V2G program mechanically increases the number of cycles. Tesla has not yet communicated the exact impact on battery longevity, but it’s something to keep in mind.

California expansion: what’s planned

After Texas, Tesla plans to extend its Powershare Grid Support program to California. No specific date has been announced, but it’s referred to as “soon.”

The utilities concerned would be PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E, the three main electricity providers in the state.

The Californian context is different from Texas. California has much more advanced regulations on renewable energy and decentralized energy storage. The potential for adoption could therefore be faster than in Texas.

Other states to come? Tesla has not officially announced anything, but we can imagine that the program will gradually expand to other regions if the pilot phases are conclusive.

For an international extension, particularly in Europe, don’t hold your breath. Regulations are very different, and Tesla will have to negotiate with each country individually.

V2G, V2H, V2L: your Cybertruck, an energy Swiss Army knife

The Cybertruck offers three different discharge modes, and it’s important not to confuse them.

The three discharge modes of the Cybertruck

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): this is the subject of this article. Your Cybertruck powers the public electricity grid during demand peaks. This function requires a partnership with energy providers and Powershare equipment.

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): your Cybertruck powers your home in the event of a power outage. This function is already available with the Powershare Home Backup equipment. Depending on your energy consumption, you can last several days with full driving range.

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): you can plug electrical appliances directly into the Cybertruck’s 120V/240V outlets. No additional equipment is needed; this function is available immediately. Practical for construction sites, camping, or any situation requiring mobile power.

Each mode meets a different need, and together, they truly transform the Cybertruck into a mobile power plant.

What about France? Not for tomorrow, but here’s why

If you’re reading this article from France, you’re probably wondering when this technology will arrive here. The short answer: not for several years, and perhaps never in this form.

Enedis regulations strictly govern electricity injection into the grid. You cannot simply plug in a battery and send power back to the grid without complex authorizations and certified equipment.

There’s also a cultural difference: France operates on a centralized electricity management model, while the United States favors greater citizen participation in the electricity grid.

Tesla has not yet launched a Tesla Electric offering in Europe, which is a prerequisite for V2G deployment. Without this commercial infrastructure, it’s impossible to implement such a program.

That said, European directives are evolving. V2G could arrive within a few years if regulations ease and Tesla decides to invest in this direction.

What could already be done in France, if Powershare equipment arrived in Europe: V2H (home backup) and V2L (powering appliances), which do not require interaction with the public grid.

Tesla’s initiative with the Cybertruck and the Powershare Grid Support program represents a significant step towards a more decentralized and resilient electricity grid. Real-time data already shows the impact of such solutions on grid stability, as confirmed by official sources from the energy sector. If the model works in Texas and California, it could inspire other regions of the world to rethink their approach to distributed energy storage.
