Many Tesla Model 3 SR or LR owners wonder if the efficiency of Aero Wheels is proven. The answer is clearly yes.
First, it’s important to know that they can reduce energy consumption by about 3% to 5%, which is not insignificant.
On a 100 km trip where you consume 20 kWh, you could consume 19 kWh with Aero Wheels, saving 0.8 to 1 kWh.
Note that the savings we mentioned above occur when you drive fast, mainly on the highway, and when air resistance is higher.

The 2 main advantages of Aero Wheels
Using Aero Wheels offers two advantages:
- The flatter the hubcap, the fewer aerodynamic disturbances caused by the spokes of the rims. But you can’t close the hubcap completely… (see next point)
- Inside the rim, there is an airflow from the inside out, which helps cool the brake disc. A strong airflow means better brake cooling, but greater aerodynamic drag. Aero wheels help reduce this flow.
As you’ve understood, the main purpose of the Aero Wheel is simply to close the rim and thus combat drag.
In summary, Aero wheels aren’t just there for aesthetics (or to look ugly, that’s up to you).
Would it be wise to have different Aero Wheels for the right and left sides of the vehicle?
Why are all 4 Aero Wheels identical?
I recently read a very pertinent question on this topic: “All 4 Aero Wheels are identical. Since the slot profile is different at the entry and exit of these slots, would it therefore be wise to have different Aero Wheels for the right and left sides of the vehicle?”
In theory, the answer is yes. It would be more efficient to have different Aero Wheels for the left and right sides of the vehicle.
For Tesla, this slight aerodynamic gain was probably not worth the cost of production and the slight (I did say slight) complexity for customers to avoid installing them incorrectly and completely losing the Aero Wheel’s efficiency…
My review
Although I’m not a big fan of the aesthetics of Aero Wheels, I mainly use them during the winter season to slightly improve my energy consumption, which takes a hit due to the cold. The efficiency of Aero Wheels is real, and I feel it.
However, as soon as the warmth returns in spring, a quick clean and the Aero Wheels disappear into their storage bag until the next winter.
In this article, I haven’t gone into technical details, but I welcome comments from specialists to complete it.
