To wash your Tesla safely, use a pH-neutral shampoo, a soft microfiber mitt, and the two-bucket method. Always start with a generous pre-wash to remove dirt without scrubbing, then wash from top to bottom in sections. Absolutely avoid hard brushes, dish soap, and automatic car washes with rotating brushes.
I remember my first Tesla: sparkling, immaculate, it sat in my garage like a jewel. A few months later, after some approximate washes, I noticed fine scratches that weren’t there initially. I quickly realized that washing a Tesla is not like washing just any car.
The Tesla paint, especially on Model 3 and Model Y, is known for its fragility. A poor washing technique can quickly turn your vehicle into a scratched canvas and damage the sensitive seals around the cameras and sensors.
In this guide, I will share my complete method for a safe wash, the products that have proven effective, and especially the mistakes I made so you don’t repeat them. Because a well-maintained Tesla is a preserved investment.

Tesla bodywork specifics to know before washing
The multi-layer Tesla paint is thinner than on many traditional vehicles. This characteristic makes it particularly susceptible to micro scratches and swirls that appear with improper washing.
Certain areas require special attention: the door seals, the perimeter of the cameras (there are eight on our Teslas!), and all the sensors scattered across the bodywork. Excessive pressure or an aggressive product can compromise their waterproofing or functionality.
The finishes also influence your approach. A standard white or black paint forgives small imperfections a little better than a red or blue metallic paint, which mercilessly reveals every micro scratch in the sun.
I strongly advise you to preserve your Tesla’s bodywork in the long term by adopting the right habits now. Tesla warranties cover manufacturing defects, but not damage caused by improper maintenance.
My 2-step method for a risk-free wash
The pre-wash: the step everyone neglects
The pre-wash is your best ally against scratches. Before any contact with the bodywork, I start by rinsing the car thoroughly with clear water. This step removes 70% of the dirt without any rubbing.
I use a high-pressure cleaner, but be careful: I keep it at least 30-40 cm from the bodywork. Too close, the pressure can force water under the seals and damage electronic components. I start from the roof and gradually work my way down.
Meanwhile, I prepare my famous two-bucket technique:
- Bucket 1: water + pH-neutral shampoo
- Bucket 2: clear water to rinse the mitt
This method prevents reintroducing abrasive particles onto the paint. Simple, but incredibly effective.
The actual wash: gentleness and method
My quality microfiber mitt (never a sponge!) is my main tool. I dip it into the soapy bucket and start from the roof, working my way down section by section.
Here’s my precise technique: up-and-down movements, never circular. Circular movements create those famous holograms that shine in the sun and spoil the aesthetics.
After each section (roof, hood, left door, etc.), I immediately rinse my mitt in the clear water bucket. You’ll be surprised how quickly the water gets dirty. This is proof that your paint, on the other hand, stays clean.
I save the rims for last, with a dedicated mitt. They accumulate brake dust and road dirt that we absolutely don’t want to transfer to the bodywork.
The products I use (and those to absolutely ban)
My selection of Tesla-friendly products
pH-neutral shampoo is non-negotiable. A pH that is too acidic or too alkaline gradually degrades the protective clear coat. I prefer formulas specific to high-end cars, between โฌ15 and โฌ25 per liter.

For protection, I apply a sensor-compatible wax every 3 to 6 months. Be careful with products that leave a residual film: they can interfere with the Autopilot cameras.
My microfiber cloths are at least 300 GSM (grams per square meter). Below that, they are too thin and risk scratching. I always have about ten in rotation, washed without fabric softener, which reduces their absorbency.
For drying, two options: a special bodywork blower (zero contact) or an XXL microfiber towel. I gently dab, without rubbing.
Total budget to properly equip yourself: around โฌ80-120. An investment quickly paid off compared to the price of a paint renovation.
The enemies of your paint
Dish soap is the number one mistake. While it cleans, it also strips away all the protections (wax, ceramic treatment) you’ve applied. Its aggressive degreasing formula attacks the clear coat in the long term.
Hard brushes and abrasive sponges are to be permanently banned. I’ve seen Model 3s with such pronounced swirls that they looked like sandpaper.
Also avoid solvent-based products (white spirit, acetone) even for stubborn stains. They literally dissolve paint layers.
Finally, automatic car washes with rotating brushes are a Tesla’s worst nightmare. These brushes accumulate dirt from hundreds of vehicles and spin at high speed. Guaranteed result: deep scratches.
How often should you wash your Tesla?
Personally, I wash my Tesla about every 15 days. This is my ideal rhythm with daily use in urban and suburban areas.
Several factors influence this frequency: the weather, the type of roads taken, and parking (garage vs. outdoors). A Tesla parked under a tree requires more frequent washes due to sap.
In winter, I increase the frequency. Road salt is extremely corrosive and attacks the underbody and wheel arches. A weekly wash is not a luxury under these conditions.
Summer brings its own challenges: crushed insects on the windshield and hood, sticky tree sap. The longer you wait, the more these contaminants embed themselves and become difficult to remove without damaging the paint.
My advice: don’t rely solely on visual appearance. A thin, invisible layer of pollution can already start to attack the clear coat. Run your hand over the bodywork: if it’s rough, it’s time to wash.
My 5 pro tips for a flawless result
1. Work in the shade: this is my golden rule. In direct sunlight, water evaporates instantly and leaves impossible-to-remove hard water spots. Hot paint also dries shampoo too quickly.
2. Start with the wheels: they often splash dirty water. By washing them first, I avoid re-contaminating an already clean bodywork.
3. Demineralized water for the final rinse: this is my secret for a streak-free result. Tap water contains limescale that leaves white deposits. Five liters of demineralized water (โฌ2 at the supermarket) are enough for the final rinse.
4. Dry immediately: I never let water dry naturally. That’s a guarantee of streaks. I dry section by section, right after rinsing.
5. Regular protection: a good wax or ceramic treatment every 3-6 months greatly facilitates subsequent washes. Dirt literally slides off the surface.
Bonus for high-pressure wash stations: I use the “foam” mode first, let it sit for 2-3 minutes, then rinse with “clear water” mode, keeping the wand at a good distance. And to protect and maintain your Tesla’s exterior between full washes, a quick rinse after rain prevents dirt accumulation.
For the seals, I discovered a tip: a little low-pressure compressed air (never a full-blast garage compressor!) expels residual water and prevents mold.
Properly washing your Tesla is not rocket science, but it requires method and the right products. It’s a moment I’ve learned to appreciate: an hour invested every 15 days to protect an investment worth tens of thousands of euros seems like an excellent ratio to me.
Your Tesla deserves this care, and you’ll quickly see the difference in the longevity of the paint. Moreover, according to industry experts, regular and appropriate maintenance preserves not only the aesthetics but also the resale value of the vehicle.
And you, what are your tips for keeping your Tesla immaculate? Feel free to customize your Tesla’s exterior once you’ve mastered its maintenance. A well-maintained bodywork is the ideal base for any future customization.
