Samsung to manufacture Tesla's AI chips in Texas starting in 2026

I’ll be frank with you: when I learned that Samsung had just received official approval to occupy 8,200 mยฒ of its gigantic Fab 1 factory in Taylor, Texas, I knew that things were getting serious. This temporary occupancy permit marks the beginning of production for the famous AI chips that will power Full Self-Driving in our Teslas. And guess what? Mass production is expected to start in the second half of 2026. It’s an exciting technological race between Samsung and TSMC, and I’m going to explain everything to you.

Samsung Reaches a Decisive Milestone in Texas

Let’s start at the beginning: what is a temporary occupancy permit? It’s simply a permit that allows Samsung to start using part of its factory even before all final certifications are in place. In this specific case, it concerns 88,000 square feet, or approximately 8,200 mยฒ of the Fab 1 building located in Taylor, Texas.

But make no mistake: these 8,200 mยฒ are just the beginning. The full campus spans 486 hectares, and Samsung plans to reach 6 million square feet of production space by the end of 2026. The ambition is colossal.

Regarding the timeline, here’s what to expect: extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography tests will begin in March 2026, and mass production will start in the second half of 2026. Samsung isn’t stopping there: the factory is expected to expand by an additional million square feet by 2028. This is serious business.

AI5 and AI6 Chips at the Heart of Tesla’s Strategy

Generations of Chips Chaining Together at High Speed

Elon Musk recently confirmed it: the AI5 chip design is “almost complete,” while AI6 development is “already underway.” What particularly fascinates me is the stated goal: design cycles of only 9 months between each generation.

To put that into perspective, the semiconductor industry generally operates on 18 to 24-month cycles. Tesla aims to halve that time, or even more. This is unprecedented in the automotive industry! This frantic pace demonstrates Tesla’s urgency and ambition in the race for autonomy.

Why These Chips Are Crucial for Your Tesla

Concretely, these chips are the brain of your vehicle. They perform the billions of calculations necessary for processing camera images, interpreting the environment, and making autonomous driving decisions. Without them, there’s no Full Self-Driving worthy of the name.

The new generation of onboard AI will enable more ambitious software updates, new features, and ultimately, transform your Tesla into a true robotaxi. The more powerful and efficient the chips, the more accurately your vehicle can analyze its environment and react instantly. It’s as simple as that.

These advancements will also benefit future compact models at $25,000, thus democratizing access to advanced autonomous driving.

A State-of-the-Art Factory for 2-Nanometer Technology

Let’s talk technical, but simply. The 2-nanometer technology we’re talking about here is like going from a two-lane highway to a ten-lane highway: you can pass much more information in the same space. The smaller the transistors, the more powerful the chip and the less energy it consumes. This is exactly what Tesla needs.

Extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) is the cutting-edge technology that allows these microscopic circuits to be etched. Samsung plans to start EUV tests in March 2026, which shows they’re not wasting any time.

The scale of the project is impressive: the campus spans over 1,200 acres (486 hectares), with a planned capacity of 6 million square feet by the end of 2026, and an additional million by 2028. It’s a veritable city dedicated to manufacturing the latest generation of semiconductors.

The Foundry Battle: Samsung vs. TSMC

Tesla is playing it smart by not putting all its eggs in one basket. The dual sourcing strategy is essential: both Samsung AND TSMC will produce the AI5 chips. Why? To reduce dependence on a single supplier and secure supply.

TSMC, the Taiwanese giant, is currently building 11 factories in Arizona and is also participating in this race. For its part, Samsung is aiming for colossal growth: +130% in orders for its 2nm chips in 2026. The competition is fierce, and Tesla is benefiting from it.

This securing of semiconductor supply is all the more crucial after the shortages we’ve experienced. Tesla is learning from the past and ensuring that a stockout will never hinder its production. Moreover, the question of the origin of Tesla components perfectly illustrates this geographical diversification strategy.

What This Concretely Changes for the Tesla Ecosystem

Let’s take a step back. This local production on American soil is not insignificant. It offers obvious geopolitical advantages, reduces logistical delays, and strengthens the resilience of the supply chain. No longer is there a need to rely solely on Asia for the most strategic components.

Tesla’s technological independence is significantly strengthened. By controlling the design AND securing the production of its chips, Tesla masters its technological destiny from end to end. This is exactly what differentiates Tesla from traditional manufacturers.

Concretely, this means an acceleration in FSD development. New generations of chips will arrive faster, autonomous driving capabilities will progress more rapidly, and software updates will become even more impressive. Vehicles like the future Roadster and its technological promises will directly benefit from these advancements.

In the medium term, within 2 to 3 years, we can expect even smarter Tesla vehicles, capable of handling increasingly complex driving situations. According to industry experts, these innovations in semiconductors represent a major turning point for the automotive industry. The promise of true autonomous driving has never been closer, and this Samsung factory in Texas is a fundamental cornerstone.
